1 Definitions
2 Check-out Activities
3 Mechanical Completions
4 Control of Check-out

1 DEFINITIONS
The last actual activity of the Contractor's installation work is check-out (except tightness tests of certain piping and the acid cleaning and blow-off of high pressure steam and feed water piping, which operations may be executed later and are the Contractor's responsibility) which ends in mechanical completion.

The check-out for re-installation work consists of:
- MEI checks (i.e. aligning, lubrication, cleanliness etc.)
- Checks against flow sheets
- Hydrostatic and tightness tests
- Flushing and blowing
- Static and rotational tests
- Corrections
- Test runs (dry) etc.

When an area (or an independent section) of the work has been mechanically completed, the Contractor shall advise the purchaser in writing that the section of work is ready for check-out procedures and inspection.

2 CHECK-OUT ACTIVITIES

2.1 General

All equipments, piping, tanks, silencers, cooler/ hearters to be clearly marked with name and equipment numbers, the numbering system shall follow drawings and flow sheets or instruction form the purchaser..

The check-out activities may briefly be considered under the following headings.

2.2 Visual and Static Checks

These would essentially be visual checks but in certain cases purchaser would ask to include the use of measuring or other instruments. Examples of these activities:

2.2.1 Visual Inspection

- From flow sheets, layout drawings etc. check that all equipment is installed. Check that tanks, vats, piping, air ducts etc. are free from foreign material and clean.
- Check that all instruments are installed.
- Check that all safety guards and handrails are in position.
- Check cleanliness of mill site and process departments. Strip temporaries wherever possible.

2.2.2 Mechanical

- Check that grouting of foundations is complete.
- Check alignment of couplings, belt and chain drives etc.
- Check cooling and sealing water piping and connections to process equipment
- Check that standards have been attained.
- Check cleanliness of equipment, tanks etc.
- Ensure that all pressure and hydrostatic tests have been executed.

2.3 Testing and Rotational Checks

2.3.1 Manual Equipment

- Check all manual valves for operation.
- Check all manual dampers, gates and other devices for operation.

2.3.2 Mechanical

- By opening inspection ports, removing spool pieces check that equipment is clear from foreign materials. In specific cases dismantle the equipment to check for freedom from foreign matter.
- Wherever possible check that equipment is free to turn by hand.
- Check tension of belt and chain drives.  Check the couplings for correct
   installation and free movements.

2.3.3 Lubrication

- Grease and lubricate as specified for bearings, gear-boxes, valve spindles, chain drives, hoist ropes etc.

2.3.4 Dry Run

- Complete couplings, chain and belt drives etc.
- Where possible, run equipment dry.
- Check all aspects of the running equipment, i.e. noise, temperature vibrations etc and correct it if necessary.

2.4 Flushing of Process Pipelines and Blowing of Steam Pipelines

2.4.1 All process lines shall either be flushed with water using process pumps or visually inspected.

2.4.2 All steam lines to the turbine, turbo pumps etc. to be blown clean with steam.

3 MECHANICAL COMPLETION

3.1 Completion of Erection

On completion of erection of an area or an identifiable section within an area, the Contractor shall advise the Purchaser in writing. The Purchaser shall, after inspection and acceptance, advice the Commissioning Group in writing. Where the erection has not been totally completed, the purchaser shall specify the exceptions.

3.2 Acceptance for Control Adjustments

The general requirements for acceptance of an area for Control Adjustments shall be:

- Completion of erection of all equipment
- Completion of all guards, handrails, platforms etc.
- Cleanliness of area
- Temporaries dismantled as far as is practical
- Scaffolding dismantled and removed

4 CONTROL OF CHECK-OUT

4.1 Method of Checking and Control

4.1.1 Common Equipment

For common equipment standard check lists are to be prepared, for example
- pumps-gearboxes
- H.V. switchboards

4.1.2 Non-standard Equipment

The Area Leader and Group Leader shall specify the checks to be carried out by the Manufacturer's instruction manual.

4.1.3 Tags

Tags may be attached to items of equipment listing the main checking activities with space for signature by the authorized person.

4.1.4 Overall Checking of Progress

For overall control by the Area Leader and Group Leader the following documents shall be used as master check lists:
